5A students are enthralled with Wonder and I found a fun and interesting video with the author, RJ Palacio. She voices exactly what we will be learning in Writers' Workshop, everyone is a writer and has something to tap into. She felt responsible to finish the characters' stories because she was the only one who knew their voice. What can you identify with after watching the video? Comment below. Although you are not high schoolers, do you think you would benefit and succeed in the independent project? Would you want to participate in the independent project, why or why not?
To me think has a link to our Genius Hour, but with way more depth. Do you think 5th graders are capable of learning independently? Should I try it with my class next year? Support your opinions with Do you agree with the video? Can kids make the world better? Why or why not? This video is inspirational to me because the little boy in it took the negative energy from bullying and put it toward something positive. This also relates to the assembly today, be a peace maker. Please share a time you had to be a peace maker in the comment section. Please watch the video below and write your reaction to the video and what our class can do to help more people have access to clean water in the comment section. We are currently reading Because of Mr. Terupt for our read aloud. We learned Jeffery's brother Michael had down syndrome. This video makes me smile and speaks to me by showing that we are all alike, even through our differences. The people in the video have down syndrome, but they are happy and love life just like you and me. I can't help but smile and dance along with them to celebrate being happy, no matter what defines you. In our story all the characters are defined, for good or bad, through their narration. Alexia is defined as a brat, but is she really when we look deeper? Luke is defined as a smart student, but isn't he more than that? What defines you? What thing in your life do people focus on to make you feel less than you are? For so long in my life I was defined by my height. It may sound silly, but I felt ashamed of being tall because people picked on me and I thought it limited me in the things I could pursue. It took a long time for me to be HAPPY about what God gave me. Please share in the comments what defines you. Another Monday is here, and if you want to smile (and maybe cry) watch this Monday Motivation video. How would you feel if you were this waitress? Can you think of a time in your life when someone showed extreme kindness to you? Comment on this post. As we learned for our assembly, hunger is a world wide problem. There is enough food in teh world, but not everyone has access to it. After watching this video one could feel helpless, or one could feel motivated.
Check out ten kids (just like you) that used the motivation and started charities to help others. (source: http://www.buzzfeed.com/nakedjuice/incredible-charities-started-by-children) Leave a comment answering one of the two prompts: 1. What part of the video grabbed your attention and why? 2. What is a problem you see that needs solving and what are you going to do about it? Leave a comment and respond to a peer's comment by Wednesday. I think you'll recognize most of the people in this video. What do they all have in common? They have pursued their passion and used their gifts to change the world. Can you imagine a world without Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, or Walt Disney? Thankfully, they were wise enough to go after what they were passionate about. In 5A we do Genius Hour for an hour each week. The purpose of this is to let you, the students, explore your passions. You have so many different things you are interested in and I want to make sure you have time to answer those questions and pursue something YOU want to learn. What are you pursuing this Genius Hour cycle and how will you share it with the world? Comment on this post and respond to one classmate's post by Tuesday. |
